Stroke Association

Working for a world where there are fewer strokes and all those touched by stroke get the help they need

Every year an estimated 150,000 people in the UK have a stroke. Of all people who suffer from a stroke, about a third are likely to die within the first 10 days, about a third are likely to make a recovery within one month and about a third are likely to be left disabled and needing rehabilitation. Stroke has a greater disability impact than any other medical condition. A quarter of a million people are living with long-term disability as a result of stroke in the UK.

The Stroke Association is the only UK wide charity solely concerned with combating stroke in people of all ages. It funds research into prevention, treatment and better methods of rehabilitation, and helps stroke patients and their families directly through its Rehabilitation and Support Services. These include Communication Support, Family and Carer Support, information services and welfare grants. We also campaign, educate and inform to increase knowledge of stroke at all levels of society, and we act as a voice for everyone affected by stroke.

A Tribute to my brother

Claire Howie, pictured with brother Paul (on left) and younger brother Mark.

My brother Paul’s stroke was devastating for our family & his new wife of only four months. At 41 years old it came from no-where - he was young, fit and full of life. I set-up Paul’s Remembrance Fund because, as well as wanting part of him to live on, my family and friends also want to help raise funds to help continue research and support for families affected by stroke.

A Special Tribute
